Matthew & Leora Quilt

Tavan’s Compass

Baby Quilt, 2015

mia-quilt

The primary element of this quilt is a compass, symbolizing the journey with many yet unknown directions this child will take.  The solid blue and solid yellow in the center of the quilt represent the child’s parents.  The light blue and yellow floral squares represent the child, incorporating the parents’ colors into a pattern that is itself original, just as a child incorporates many of his parents’ influences into an identity that is unique and all his own.

The cardinal directions on the compass are marked by yellow arrows, reflecting the primary role of the parents in guiding the child on his life’s journey.  The intermediate points of the compass are marked by red squares, symbolizing the larger community that provides further guidance and direction to the child.  The entire design is also framed in red, acknowledging that the child and family exist within the framework of a community.  From there, further borders of yellow and red represent the additional layers of family and society that will play a role in raising and nourishing the child throughout his life.
